Discussion: Revolution in Belarus - Historical Images and Symbols
The elections on August 9th brought the Republic of Belarus into the public eye. If the country was previously treated as a “white spot” or “Europe's last dictatorship”, today everyone is asking about its national identity and the meaning of the white-red-white flag. Members of the Belarusian-German History Commission, founded in January 2020, discuss the historical meanings of the term Belarus.
What role did the historical landscape play in the Polish-Lithuanian Union and what role in the Russian and Soviet empires? How is the story of a state told in Belarus that was proclaimed a People's Republic in 1918 and a Soviet Republic in 1919, but which only gained independence in 1991?
Discussing: Felix Ackermann, German Historical Institute Warsaw Thomas Bohn, Justus Liebig University Giessen Diana Siebert, Cologne
Moderation: Anke Hilbrenner, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen The panel discussion will take place as part of the Revolution in Belarus series of events.
