The lecture tackles societal and political transformations in post-Soviet Ukraine in their reciprocal interplay, with a special focus on the political agency of the ‘people.’ It is exposed how the population was reinvented as the ‘electorate.’ Two opposing currents are crucial in the context: the one of emerging citizenry affirming itself through mass protests known as the ‘Maidans’; and the other one of spectatorship in the political theatre of ‘Potemkin democracy’ (Stephen Holmes). The key patterns of interaction between ‘people’ and ‘authorities’ as well as social/political imaginaries underlying these interactions are discussed.
