A2 - Policy of Remembrance and Media, P. Haslinger

A2 - Media (and Knowledge) representations of interethnic and legacy conflicts: West-Ukraine, Transylvania, Southern Slovakia since 1980

Key Questions

Which positions are present due to the limitations of historically contested regions? Which of these positions promote conflict?

How do scientific arguments contribute to popular representations of a region’s past or present? Whose perspective do these representational strategies assume?

What differences can be seen in print, electronic and digital media discourses? Which correlations are visible in system and media transfers?

Objectives

Memory politics and its representations in media: Europeanisation, regionalisation and (re)nationalisation as catalysts for the transformation of previous conflict discourses.

Actors and strategies of representation: analysis of the interaction between science, politics and media as well as international, bilateral, national and regional or local contexts.

Interpretative knowledge: construction of a typology of medial conflicts in place of an inclination towards case-based resolution strategies
